Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin condition in which the immune system triggers the excess production of skin cells. Psoriasis causes red and scaly patches of skin called plaques. Plaques appear on the elbows, knees, and scalp, but maybe they can develop anywhere on the body.

Some best home remedies may help relieve symptoms. Before using home remedies, it may be a good decision to talk to a doctor. Home remedies tend to work best when people use them with medical treatment.

Best Home Remedies for Psoriasis

Using home remedies either alone or in with medical treatment may improve psoriasis symptoms.

However, some home remedies may interact with medications, so any person who is thinking about using any of them should talk to a specialist first.

It is also very important to check psoriasis symptoms to ensure that the remedies are not causing them to get worse.

Salt baths

A warm bath can be soothing the skin, especially for individuals with psoriasis. You can try adding salt, mineral oil, colloidal oatmeal, or olive oil to help in itching and irritation.

Bathing with Sea salts has shown a beneficial effect for treating psoriasis.it contains a wealth of minerals.

In one small clinical study, participants who bathed in a Dead Sea salt bath or a bath with common salt for 20 minutes daily for three weeks saw a significant improvement in their psoriasis symptoms. Those who took Dead Sea salt baths had an even higher improvement in symptoms compared to individuals who took common salt baths. Aloe Vera.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a plant famous for its skin-healing properties. Creams that contain 0.5 percent Aloe Vera can help reduce itching, inflammation, flaking, and redness on the scalp. This cream should be applied up to three times daily to keep skin moist. It may take up to a month to start the feeling and seeing of positive effects.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar may assist reduce itchiness associated with psoriasis. Try applying organic apple cider vinegar to your skin a few times a week.

You can mix the apple cider vinegar 1-to-1 with water. Wash the skin after applying to prevent irritation. Don’t try this remedy if your skin is cracked or bleeding. You should see results in many weeks.

Fish oil or omega-3 fats

Research has shown that omega 3 fatty acids, which fish or fish oil supplements often contain, can reduce inflammation and improve autoimmune diseases.

A 2014 analysis found “moderate evidence” that fish oils might help people with psoriasis, in both ways inflammatory and autoimmune.

However, the outcome of this benefit may depend on the type of fish oil, the dosage, and the type of psoriasis.

Omega-3 fatty acids show the most effective component of the oil.

It is possible that some individuals may experience side effects when using fish oil. Some side effects include:

Nausea

Indigestion

Diarrhea

A fishy taste in the tongue

People who take blood thinners medicines have high risk of bleeding if they will take omega-3 supplements.

Capsaicin

Chili peppers get their heat from a compound called capsaicin. German researchers have found some proves that products with capsaicin can help reduce the pain, redness, inflammation, and flaking caused by psoriasis. But more study is needed to understand exactly how it works.

Products that have capsaicin may sting skin. Avoid direct applying to open wounds and touching your eyes, genitals, mouth, and other sensitive areas after handling capsaicin cream.

 Probiotics

Probiotics are good bacteria that are present in yogurt and fermented foods. People can also take them in supplements.

Having the correct balance of bacteria in the body may help the immune system. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, so probiotics may be helpful in treating symptoms.

Research state that a specific type of probiotic called Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 may help regulate inflammatory responses in the body that help in psoriasis symptoms.

Curcumin

Curcumin is the main ingredient in the spice turmeric. It may reduce inflammation in the body, and it may also reduce psoriasis.

The authors of a recent review of the research stated that there are many prove to support the therapeutic effect of curcumin in treating psoriasis.

The findings of a 2016 study in mice led researchers to state that curcumin has “great potential to treat psoriasis.”

Oregon grape

Oregon grape, or Mahonia aquifolium, is a remedy that may help calm the immune response in psoriasis.

In a report on three clinical trials involving a total of 104 individuals, the authors conclude that M. aquifolium cream is a “safe and effective” treatment for mild-to-moderate psoriasis.

In 2018, authors reviewing the evidence to treating psoriasis with M. aquifolium found seven studies investigating its use. They stated that M. aquifolium can improve symptoms and is secure and effective with some side effects.

Moisturizers

Itching and flaking can make psoriasis look worse, so it is essential to keep skin moisturized.

The AAD note that moisturizing creams are a standard treatment to use alongside other therapies.

Applying a heavy ointment or thick cream three times daily may help control symptoms and keep skin feeling comfortable.

People should look for products that are free of fragrances and have the label “for sensitive skin.”

A cream that contains aloe vera may also help.

 Maintaining a good weight

Obesity not only a person’s risk of having psoriasis but also is associated with having more severe diseases. If you’re overweight or obese, research shows that losing weight may be able to help improve psoriasis symptoms. Reducing some pounds can also make psoriasis treatments more effective.

Easy ways to lose weight include:

  • Taking more whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables
  • Eating lean meats and healthy proteins
  • Taking less sugar
  • Avoid taking  highly processed foods
  • exercising regularly

The bottom line

Home remedies aren’t a replacement for your doctor’s medications to treat psoriasis. Remedies like fish oil supplements, Oregon grape, and Dead Sea salt baths do show a consistently strong elements of helping with psoriasis symptoms. However, there aren’t enough, well-controlled clinical trials to prove that these remedies work very well for everyone.

Always ask your doctor before you start a new treatment or home remedy for psoriasis. Stop or avoiding using any treatment that causes irritation, pain, or worsening of your symptoms.
